- Tolchaco Chert Clovis Point
Description: Tolchaco chert Clovis projectile point base. Lanceolate in shape and fluted on only one side, this point was thinned by percussion and pressure flaking, followed by grinding on the edges of the base and the lower 1/3 of the sides. The image on the left is of the original projectile point material. The image on the right is of the same point "smoked" with ammonium chloride to intensify the flake scars. Description: Isolated Clovis fluted projectile point found northeast of West Mesa and east of the Citadel Sink in Wupatki National Monument, Arizona. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) identified the the material as Black Tank obsidian, the source of which is located more than 50 miles from Wupatki National Monument. The images on the left are of the original projectile point material. The images on the right are of the same point "smoked" with ammonium chloride to intensify the flake scars. Dimensions: 55.4 mm (L) x 27.8 mm (max. W) x 8.8 (max. T). Base width is 25.2 mm with a basal concavity depth of 4.3 mm. Both lateral margins are ground. Description: San Pedro side-notched projectile point, made from an orangish-pink mottled fossil sponge. The point has an overall red patina but has been reflaked in a few places through the patina, especially on one notch and along the edge of one side. Dimensions: 4.2 x 2.1 x .06 cm. Description: Cienega Short projectile point made of a mottled pink/red chert and deeply notched in the corners. The point has a waxy appearance, which may indicate the chert was heat-treated before being knapped. Dimensions: 2.44 x 2.02 x 0.53 cm.
