Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan (Wupatki Pueblo, A.D. 1130 – A.D. 1260) Description: A possible bone gaming piece carving with an interlocking pattern similar to Black Mesa ceramic decorations. Found in a room at Wupatki Pueblo, it is also possible that the bone was used as a weaving batten or perhaps worn as an adornment Dimensions: 7.7(L) x 1.95(W) x 0.32(T)cm (3.03 x 0.77 x 0.13in). Description: Game tallies? Kick ball? Sling stone? Club head? Or kiva "thunder" stone, rolled across the floor to imitate thunder? Stone balls had many uses. The ball on the left retains what may be hematite or ocher pigment and measures approximately 6.9 cm in width. The ball on the right measures approximately 4.8 cm wide, and was collected with a mortar, in which the ball fit. Description: Hafted agave knife with an agave stalk handle. The stone knife blade was flaked along the edges and then pushed through the agave stalk while the stalk was still green (there are stretch cracks around the pointed end of the stone). This tool was well-used and exhibits extreme use-polish on the stone knife. Dimensions: Stalk-40.2 cm long, 4.5 cm diameter; Blade-14 x 9 cm. Description: Thin argillite bead blanks in a plainware or Verde Brown bowl. The blanks are of various shapes; some are square while others are six-sided. These blanks, of which there are 652, were found in a single cache. Only 19 are perforated. Dimensions: Bead blanks average about 0.6 cm across. Bowl-3.8 cm H, 9.2 x 6.8 cm opening. Description: Argillite paint mortar with 27 vertical exterior grooves (each 2 mm wide by 2 mm deep). A black substance adheres to the interior of the mortar, which was at one time well polished all around. A large piece of the base has broken and been mended. Cultural Period: Archaic (Elko Series, Archaic, 9,000 - 1,000 BP) Description: This Elko-series projectile point was found three miles west of Crack-in-Rock Ruin in Wupatki National Monument. The point was made from red Chinle chert and was broken in two when first found. It has since been repaired. Dimensions: 4.8 x 2.0 x 0.48 cm (1.89 x 0.79 x 0.19 in).
