- Tump Line in a Tapestry Weave
Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan Description: Section of a tump line (a strap crossing the forehead or chest to aid in carrying a load on the back) from Wupatki Pueblo. The strap is cotton yarn on yucca warp, and is decorated with a polychrome design in blue and two shades of brown. Since cotton couldn't be grown at higher elevations, it was likely acquired from the Hohokam further south. Dimensions: 10.0 cm (L) x 3.25 cm (W) (3.94 in x 1.28 in). Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan and Hohokam Description: Plain-weave cotton cloth dyed red. The North Country is too cold for cotton to grow, so the cloth, or the cotton from which it was woven, was likely traded to the Sinagua by their southern neighbors, the Hohokam. Common name: Agave, Hohokam Agave Scientific name; Agave murpheyi Descriptive: Murphy's Agave is a relatively small agave variety. The leaves are fleshy, light blue-green to yellow-green, spined along the edges and at the leaf tip, and grow in a rosette from the heart of the plant. Uses: Extensively cultivated for food and fiber by the prehistoric Hohokam of southern Arizona. - Human Head Figurine
