Description: Argillite paint mortar with 27 vertical exterior grooves (each 2 mm wide by 2 mm deep). A black substance adheres to the interior of the mortar, which was at one time well polished all around. A large piece of the base has broken and been mended. The fragment has a white background and a red design consisting of rectangles or broad line segments and one small triangle. No pattern is apparent, but this particular mural segment is fragmentary. The fragment has a white background with black and red geometric designs that consist mainly of broad vertical lines. There is also a partial half-terrace figure. Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan Description: Stone palette shaped by chipping and grinding sandstone to form a rectangular shape in which three cupules are spaced equally. Each cupule still bears the remnants of minerals ground for paint pigment at Wupatki Pueblo. The yellow, orange, and brown pigments are derived from iron-rich minerals such as limonite, ochre, and perhaps hematite. Dimensions: 23.0L x 11.7W x 3.7T cm.
