Kwakina Polychrome Ladle

ELMO00000610.jpg Ladle, Alternate ViewThumbnailsBlack-on-white Ladle

Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan, Atsinna Pueblo (A.D. 1275 – mid-1300s)

Description: Kwakina Polychrome ladle with a snake design on the handle and a loop in the handle end (catalog description).

Deborah Huntley, of the Center for Desert Archaeology, agrees this ladle as the early Zuni Glaze Ware type Kwakina Polychrome.

Barbara Mills, Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Arizona, also says this is Kwanika Polychrome, but suggests the paint may have been done by a child because the line execution is not very good.

Provenience: LA 99 (Atsinna Pueblo), Rm 7, Lower fill.

Collection: National Park Service, El Morro.
