Four Awls from Room 10

ELMO00001165.jpg Splinter Awl from Room 8ThumbnailsFive Awls from Room 10

Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan, Atsinna Pueblo (A.D. 1275 – mid-1300s)

Description: The catalog lists only three awls with this catalog number, including one polished rabbit (?) long bone awl, one metapodial awl with a modified squared off and rounded head, and one polished splinter awl with a v-cut in the end. The ulnar awl in the back of the image is not listed in association with Catalog No. ELMO 1165. An ulnar awl is described for Catalog No. ELMO 1166, but not pictured. Therefore, it may be safe to assume that the ulnar awl pictured here is from ELMO 1166, where it is described in the catalog as an unworked deer ulna with a broken tip.

Provenience: LA 99 (Atsinna Pueblo), RM 10, Upper fill (Floor fill for the deer ulna, if this artifact is from ELMO 1166 rather than ELMO 1165).

Collection: National Park Service, El Morro.
