Fire Stick Fragment
Cultural Period: Ancestral Puebloan (Wupatki Pueblo, A.D. 1130 – A.D. 1260)
Description: A fragment of a wooden fire drill found in the trash of Wupatki Pueblo. The stick would have been used in tandem with the hearth board in the next slide to create heat from friction that would in turn light tinder to start a fire.
Dimensions: 6.0 (L) x 1.8 (diameter) cm (2.36 x 0.71 in).
