What Do the Rock Images Mean?

The term “rock art” was created by Western Archaeologists to describe the carved and painted images created by Indigenous peoples. The designs depicted in rock images cannot be translated like hieroglyphs as they are not a written language. Rock images are more than just “art” to Native peoples. The images can represent deeply held spiritual, personal, familial, and historical meanings for different people of different Tribes. Western Archaeologists will never be able to say why these images were created, or what they mean. Only the people who created them, or their direct descendants, know the cultural significance and importance these images contain.
